Profits of Death:
An Insider Exposes the Death Care Industries

by Darryl J. Roberts

Ronald writes:

I think that everyone in the industry should read your book and do so soon. Thanks for your telling the truth about our industry. I am both a Licensed Embalmer and Licensed Funeral Director. I have refused to work for many organizations due to how employees are treated. I hope you include that in your next book. Most mortuaries do not supply basic protection for chemical, biological, lifting, and other hazards. They really do not want to pay employees fairly, nor pay benefits, and walk away from those injured on the job. Keep up the good work. You are telling the truth.

Darryl writes:

Thanks for your input. In all of the years that My book has been in circulation, I have received many compliments from members of the industry. There have also been quite a few who have insisted that I must be the devil himself for disclosing, what many consider, insider secrets. However, the only thing that anyone has really said is that they wish I had not published the book. No one in or out of the death care business has ever said that there is anything incorrect about the information that I disclosed.

Henry asked:

My Mother recently died and we bought a sealed casket on the recommendation of the funeral director. Since the funeral the family has discussed sealed caskets and are confused as to whether we are sealing something in or out. Please help.

Darryl writes:

Sealer caskets do nothing to prevent the normal decomposition of human remains. Some would eve argue that the use of a seal actually causes a more un-natural form of decomposition. These caskets are sealed using a strip of rubber between the bottom of the casket and the lid. The seal will eventually deteriorate thus providing no long-term protection. The industry wants to sell these “protective” caskets because they are more expensive. My recommendation is that no one buy this type of casket because they provide no protective benefit. To some people, knowing or believing that their loved on is being protected provides some mental satisfaction.
