Tractors, Planes, Golf and Dames
by Don W. Volk
WHAT IS THIS BOOK ABOUT?
Memoirs need not – and perhaps, should not – be written solely by those of fame or notoriety, of wealth or position. Given the vastness and variety of the human population, people qualifying for membership in those categories are few in number. The vast majority of others are equally deserving of recording the events of their lives for others to read and learn from them.
Such is the case with Don W. Volk. His book, Tractors, Planes, Golf and Dames, recounts the eight decades (so far) of his life from days spent on farms as a youth to serving his country through three wars: World War II (The Greatest Generation), the Korean War and Vietnam as a military pilot. The book also traces his dedication to pursuing a career with the Professional Golf Association of America. Even more importantly, however, he writes openly about his love for his wife Petie, his girlfriend Sandy whom he cared for until her death from cancer, and Wandi, his lovely second wife, whose path crossed his after Petie passed away.
WHAT MAKES THIS BOOK UNIQUE?
The obvious, of course, is that each life is unique. What happens all too often, however, is that a person’s stories are entrusted to our memories. When the person is gone, our memories of them struggle to remain vivid and relevant. Don W. Volk has taken the considerable effort to record the events large and small of his long and colorful life, not only for his immediate family and friends, but for the rest of us as well.
The author’s life has spanned the remarkable events that have affected at least three generations of Americans. His wartime experiences (World War II - The Greatest Generation, Korea and Vietnam) alone will resonate with countless others. Similarly, the loves and losses of his life will be poignantly familiar to nearly everyone who reads his story. It also addresses the fact that dreams can be pursued without a college education, if for some reason one cannot be acquired.
